LOUISBURG -- A status conference on the county's murder cases provided clarity on a number of matters moving forward.• After reviewing a forensic mental evaluation, Superior Court Judge Robert Hobgood ruled that James Marshall Small Jr., of Henderson, was competent to stand trial.Franklin County sheriff's investigators arrested Small on Oct. 23, alleging he killed Ronald Davis Jr., 20.

304.Woman arrested in stabbing
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Louisburg woman following a domestic dispute. According to a report by Sgt. Troy Wheless, he responded to a report of a stabbing at 124 Ingle Drive just before 11 p.m. on Jan. 2. When Wheless arrived, the report states, he spoke with the suspect, Vivian Toney, who said that she had gone out earlier that day drinking with a friend.

A Franklinton company has two weeks to pay a fine or contest a citation that asserts it violated work safety laws that led to the death of an employee. Franciso Baez Morales, 20, was killed at Franklin Veneers on April 10 while he was removing plastic covering from a log pile when they released and rolled on top of him.

LOUISBURG — Authorities found a Louisburg man dead following a weekend wreck that plunged his vehicle into a pond. According to a report by Trooper J.O. Walter, Richard Murphy was apparently driving a 1984 Ford pickup truck along Walter Collins Road when he lost control.

For personal reasons, Franklinton staff are expecting to make a shift in their personnel. Last week, Water Plant Superintendent Richard Hinkle asked to step down from his post, but remain in the department. Hinkle told Town Manager Larry Carver he would remain in his current position until a new hire is made. At that time, he would stay on as an operator and backup to the superintendent.

A Spring Hope man was killed following a head-on collision on Friday morning. According to a report by Trooper T.L. Hunt, Glenn Sanders was traveling east on N.C. 97 when he crossed over into the westbound lane just after 9:30 a.m. The 2000 Mercedes he was driving collided with a flatbed truck driven by Richard Earl Langston of Wilson.

388.Construction materials stolen, arrest is made
LOUISBURG -- The Franklin County Sheriff's Office Patrol Division arrested a Franklin County man they allege was stealing construction materials.According to authorities, a deputy was patrolling U.S. 401 south of Louisburg in the area of Red Fern Drive when he noticed a van backing up to a new home under construction on the evening of Dec. 4.Authorities allege Richard Miller, 43, of Youngsville, was loading the materials into a van.

The second of three spring concerts at Cherry Hill Plantation in Warren County will feature pianist Jane Hawkins and violinist Richard Luby. They will perform works from the Sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven on Sunday, April 19. Richard Luby has appeared as soloist with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa of Mexico, National Radio Orchestra of Poland, the North Carolina Symphony, the National Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Detroit Symphony. He has given recitals of the complete works for violin and piano of Ives, Prokofiev, Brahms, and Stravinsky, as well as the Sonatas for violin and harpsichord of J.S. Bach.
