2401.Man jailed on $1 million bond in vehicle break-ins
A nine-year-old was hit during an apparent hit and run, but a further probe proved no wrongdoing. According to a report by Dep. K. Perry, a nine-year-old boy was running down Pine Ridge Road, just ahead of his sisters, when he was hit by a utility trailer being pulled by a truck. The vehicle did not stop following the evening wreck on Feb. 6.

The Nu Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Pi Chi National Sorority hosted its Annual Rainbow Tea on July 13 at the Interdenominational Ushers Headquarters on US #1 in Franklinton. This event is when the group celebrates the successes of the chapter and awards scholarships.Three young ladies received scholarships: Nazaria Arrington, who will be attending Winston-Salem University; Kahirah Scarborough, who will be attending NC A&T State University; and Taylor branch, who is attending Louisburg College full time and Wake Tech part time to pursue her EMS certification.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Judging by the final score, it was hard to believe that, midway through the second stanza, Bunn and Nash Central were tied during Monday's non-league gridiron tussle at The Dawg Pound on the NCHS campus.However, Bunn was just getting started en route to delivering a 77-37 decision over the homestanding Bulldogs.The score was tied at 23-23 before the Wildcats took the lead for good courtesy of a 2-yard plunge from Davante Caldwell at the 4:48 mark of the second quarter.

2412.23 grants designed to boost classroom innovation
FRANKLINTON — One of the county’s most recognizable social services organizations paired with one of the county’s leading science companies to recognize teachers for innovation in the classroom. FRANKLINTON -- Last Wednesday proved to be quite a day for Franklinton High School senior Morgan Tharrington. Around 3 p.m., Tharrington made her future plans final -- at least for the next two years -- as she signed a letter-of-intent to continue her career at Louisburg College. The fun, however, was just starting for Tharrington, who then headed to the annual Franklinton Athletic Awards Ceremony at the historic FHS Auditorium.

The 8th annual Justice Community Antique Tractor, Car & Engine Show will be Sept. 5 and 6 at Duke Memorial Baptist Church, Highway 581, Louisburg. The hours are Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for 12 and older. Proceeds will go to support the church building fund. Antique farm equipment, tractors, cars and hit-n-miss engines will be on exhibition. Exhibitors are welcome.

2423.Northeastern retreat proves to be a treat for 4-H'ers
4-H TEEN RETREAT. Ten Franklin County 4-H'ers attended the Northeast District Teen Retreat March 31-April 2. Youth traveled to the Eastern 4-H Center in Columbia, NC to stay two nights and three days. Youth attended workshops including, but not limited to, becoming a district or state officer, wildlife and the environment and public speaking.

It has been 100 years since the brutal trench battles and poison gas attacks that killed thousands of men on both sides was finally over.The war caused a huge loss of life among Franklin County natives and one local woman, Betty King has set out to document the casualties of the war so that future generations will remember the sacrifices made by a previous generation.

RALEIGH -- A delegation of Franklin County 4-H members attended 4-H Citizenship North Carolina Focus in Raleigh recently.The Franklin County delegation returned home from two days during which more than 100 youth and adults representing 34 4-H programs across the state gathered to exchange ideas, gain knowledge and learn through hands-on experiences about the importance of being an active and engaged citizen.

2427.Bulldogs take the tourney
DURHAM -- The 15-Under Bulldogs from Franklin County recently won the Memorial Weekend Basketball Tournament of Champions, which was hosted by Mt. Zion Christian Academy. In the championship game, the Bulldogs were 61-60 winners against the South Carolina Royals. Trailing most of the contest, the Bulldogs rallied and pulled to within four points with 1:07 remaining in the final quarter.

Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a handful of cases where shots were fired. No one was hit by a projectile. In the first incident, deputies responded to a Spring Hope home near the Nash County line the afternoon of Sept. 8 after shots were reported to have been fired in the neighborhood.

2430.4-H shooting sports club competes
The  Franklin Sharp Shooters — the county’s first and only  4-H shooting sports club — was chartered this past April. The primary goal of 4-H shooting sports is youth development, with parental involvement. Eight of the clubs youngsters participated Oct. 10 in the  2009 N.C. 4-H Target Shooting Sports tournament, which took place at the Millstone 4-H camp located in Elerbe.

LOUISBURG -- Some Franklin County Board of Education candidates will have decisions to make after election results become official.While the May 17 primary election revealed the highest vote getters, the race for the school board -- which is a non-partisan race -- follows General Statute rules for municipal races and requires a majority, meaning that a declared winner has to receive at least 50 percent of the vote, said Board of Elections Director Michelle Chavis.

2433.Novant pulls plug on hospital
LOUISBURG -- Novant Health Franklin Medical Center is shutting down next week, leaving Franklin County without a hospital.The news comes after an apparent failed attempt to sell the hospital during the spring and summer and about a year after Novant gutted its staff and closed three primary care practices.Novant officials said declining use made the closure necessary.

The Franklin Times published an article on May 1, 1914, recounting the history and progress of Mapleville Academy, a flourishing private school in eastern Franklin County, located near the intersection of roads leading to Nashville and Spring Hope. The unnamed author emphasized the commitment of local farm families and religious leaders to providing good educational opportunities for local youth.It had been a long-term endeavor. The article states that Carswell Finch operated a school near Maple Springs Baptist Church prior to the Civil War.

Virginia Tharrington Manley of Louisburg celebrated her 90th birthday on Saturday, Aug. 20, at 4 p.m. at the Louisburg Operations Center. She was born on Aug. 22, 1926 and lived much of her life in the Fox Park area.The head table was covered with a gold tablecloth. Attendees age 80 and above sat with the honoree.Mrs. Manley's grandson, George Thurston Manley, served as the master of ceremonies, and his sons, George Walter and Charlie Isaiah, served as greeters and ushers.

HENDERSON -- The Kerr-Vance Academy and Oxford Prep varsity basketball teams split in action last Tuesday evening.The Kerr-Vance girls defeated Oxford Prep 54-16, winning their first game of the season and the first game under new coach Sandy Ross.High scorer for the Spartans was Kennedy Adcock with 15. 2439.Suspect in fatal wreck finally apprehended
RALEIGH -- Wake County authorities arrested a Wake Forest woman accused of causing a head-on collision that killed two Franklin County women.In December, authorities charged Jennifer Baker Pearce with two counts of death by motor vehicle for the Nov. 29 wreck on U.S. 401 that killed Pamela Hayes and Emily Hodges.

2440.RAISING MONEY FOR SCHOOL
One recent evening, teachers, staff and PTA of Franklinton Elementary School traded the classroom for an apron and mop as they partnered with McDonald's in Youngsville for "McTeachers's Night" to allow McDonald's and the local schools to work together to raise funds to help support the schools. Ten percent of everything sold from 4 to 8 p.m. went to support FES. The teachers worked the drive thru, handing out food and keeping the lobby area clean. Students and parents were greeted by PTA board members Carol Davis, FES principal, and Monica Click, assistant principal,) during part of the evening.

BUNN - Bunn High School once again claimed the Northern Carolina Conference baseball championship this spring -- and that should come as no surprise, considering Chris Cullom was in charge of the program.During Cullom's five years at Bunn -- two as an assistant and the past three as head coach -- the Wildcats have claimed the NCC diamond title.And in Cullom's head coaching tenure, Bunn has put together a lofty 62-11 record against an always-challenging schedule.

LOUISBURG--Charles Edward Broughton (Chip) of Louisburg NC passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 11th, at his home after a short battle with Cancer. Chip was born to the late Charles Edward Broughton and the late Doris Wade Broughton in Raleigh, NC. He graduated from Ravenscroft High School where he was very active in both sports and the Boy Scouts. He would become an Eagle Scout and continue playing baseball throughout college. He graduated from St Leo's in Florida. Chip's true passion revolved around animals of all kinds, but especially dogs. His belief was that all animals should have the right to humane treatment and it should not matter whether they were a rescue or pure breed.

According to police, a masked man entered the Dollar General on Tarboro Road the evening of Dec. 13, wielded a silver handgun and demanded money.
