ZEBULON - Betty Rose Privette, 83, of the Pearce community went home to be with the Lord, Friday night. She was born in Franklin County, the daughter of the late Junie and Rosa Stallings Upchurch. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo Privette; sons-in-law, Douglas Medlin, Robert Smith, Rick Collura, and brother, Jerry Upchurch. Betty Rose was known in the community for being very hospitable and making everyone feel like family.

North Carolina Farm Bureau’s 2007 annual meeting and convention was the highlight of a policy development season for the more than 1,000 members from across the state who attended. PREMIER PERFORMANCE. Playwright and actor Walter Williamson, an alumnus who is serving as artist-in-residence at Louisburg College for the spring semester, will stage the world premiere of his new play "Victoria's Boy" April 6-9 at the Norris Theatre on campus. The two-act play chronicles the often strained relationship between Queen Victoria and her son, King Edward VII, who is portrayed by Williamson. Victoria blamed Edward for the death of his father, and did not want him to succeed her on the throne because she considered him unfit to rule. In the play's first act, Williamson portrays Edward the night before his mother's death.

A Louisburg man was sentenced Thursday to nearly two years in jail after being found guilty of assaulting a sheriff’s deputy. Superior Court Judge Richard Baddour Jr., set the prison term on Thursday afternoon after a jury convicted Joe Williams of felony assault on a law enforcement officer inflicting serious injury and misdemeanor assault on a government official.

1258.BHS Hall welcomes standouts
BUNN -- Two iconic individuals -- and a team whose sum proved to be greater than its parts -- were part of the induction ceremonies last Friday evening for the second class of the Bunn High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Long-time teachers and coaches Bob Wheless and Mike Lovin were presented with induction certificates, as were 15 members of Bunn’s lone state championship baseball team from 1979.

LOUISBURG -- The Franklin County Board of Commissioners recognized the Civil Air Patrol at its most recent meeting.During the Jan. 2 meeting, County Commission Chair Harry Foy noted that the Civil Air Patrol is known as America's premier public service organization for carrying out emergency services and disaster relief missions nationwide.

He was a cook with the United States Army and was a member of the Franklinton American Legion Post 52. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him.

MBAJ Architecture is asking the low bidder on the new elementary school project to detail its work history. Company spokesman Richard Thompson has said there is no problem in doing that. A letter was sent to Thompson of J.M. Thompson Co. of Raleigh on May 8 from MBAJ architect Jon Long, who is overseeing existing construction projects for the Franklin County schools system.

HENDERSON -- The Kerr-Vance Academy varsity soccer team lost 2-1 to The Oakwood School in heartbreaking fashion in overtime last Friday. It was the Spartans' first home match of the season.The first half proved to be a defensive battle with neither team able to score."It was the best game the boys had played this season," Spartan Coach Devon Honeywell said after the game. "We really kept to the game plan. Despite the loss, this was a good sign for things to come in the future."

Vance-Granville Community College held its annual reception on July 16 in the Civic Center to recognize loyal employees who had retired from the college, and particularly the five who retired in the last 12 months. This year’s recognition reception came as the college celebrates its 40th anniversary. VGCC President Randy Parker welcomed and thanked the retirees, saying, “It’s because of each of you that Vance-Granville continues to grow and prosper. FRANKLINTON -- Franklinton High School's mission was twofold during last Saturday's action at the annual Wade Halford and Lane Meyer Memorial Boys Soccer Jamboree at the FHS Football Field.The most important order of business for FHS was to honor the memory of Halford, a former Red Ram who passed away in 2011.Halford was one of the early cornerstones of what was then a new boys soccer program at Franklinton under then-coach Deran Coe.

LOUISBURG -- Just like the nation, Donald Trump secured Franklin County, besting Hillary Clinton by more than 3,500 tallies -- garnering nearly 54 percent of the vote.Trump earned 16,321 votes in Franklin County to Clinton's 12,811 votes.According to unofficial tallies, Trump did not secure the popular vote across the nation, getting 59,058,307 to Clinton's 59,204,408, but he secured the electoral college vote -- a race to 270 -- by getting 276 of those votes to Clinton's 218, making him president-elect if official tallies hold up.

Franklin County and area children were able to get in touch with their inner farmer this week. The Cooperative Extension treated nearly 40 children over two days to trips to local farms and a fishing expedition on Wednesday and Thursday, giving youngsters a peak at life on the farm. On Wednesday, about 15 children toured a number of farms, including a goat, cattle and fish farm.

Perhaps I've missed something, but when did it become patriotic to not do your job? Simply make up some "justification" and then every individual can do what they want to do with no regard for the public they are sworn to serve, their oath of office or the Constitution. We have seen this with a county clerk in Kentucky, some magistrates in North Carolina and now, apparently, we are about to see it with a large segment of the United States Senate.

1298.Old jail stabilization project well underway
The stabilization of the exterior of the old Franklin County jail on East Nash Street in Louisburg, begun in July 2016 by the Tar River Center for History and Culture Foundation, is well underway. Plans are to finish the project by the end of December.Constructed in 1874-1875 and heavily renovated in 1924-1925, the old jail housed inmates until 1975, when a new detention facility was completed on Market Street.
