YOUNGSVILLE -- Quality pitching and effective hitting are usually a lethal combination for any baseball team in a tournament setting. As the Stonewood Properties Giants proved during last week’s Youngsville Minor League Baseball Tournament at Luddy Park. The Giants’ pitching tandem of Branson Capps and Tucker Brown combined for 53 strikeouts and allowed just 11 runs in five outings. The Giants also piled up 51 total runs on offense, with Capps and Brown -- and others -- coming up with clutch base hits.

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led the transcontinental crossing of North America, beginning in 1804 and ending in 1806.

1133.High speed, two-county chase ends with struggle
YOUNGSVILLE -- A Wake Forest man is slated to appear in court later this month to face the first of several charges related to a high-speed chase through two counties that ended with a hand-to-hand battle over control of a Toyota Prius he used to play chicken with tractor trailers and a police cruiser.Youngsville police charged 54-year-old Kevin Richard Morgan with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, reckless driving and wanton disregard and misdemeanor injury to personal property.

Members of the Carolina Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation met in Louisburg on Saturday, May 23, to recognize the significant contributions made by Corporal Richard Warfington during the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804-1806.The group met at the Franklin Male Academy building on the campus of Louisburg College, which opened in January 1805, and later dedicated a marker in Warfington's honor at Joyner Park.

Louisburg Highs dominance of the Class 1-A Tar-Roanoke Athletic Conference wasnt limited to the playing field this season. When the final 2005-06 Wachovia Conference Cup standings were released, LHS held a comfortable margin in the TRAC standings, thanks to a strong spring-sports push that featured league titles in baseball, softball, girls track and field and boys track and field.

The Gold Sand High School Class of 1959 celebrated its 50th year reunion in May at Joey’s Restaurant. Virginia Radford, Onnie Cowell and Carol Dement welcomed the classmates and their spouses. J. B. Hunt gave the invocation. Each class member was given a booklet about their 1959 year, put together by Archie Gupton. He also had put each person’s picture on their name tag.

It’s a simple question asked within a series of others: “Do you want to be an organ donor?” DMV Examiners across the state ask this on a daily basis to North Carolinians receiving or renewing their driver’s licenses or ID cards. Franklin County hasn’t witnessed the severe drop-off in the housing market as some pockets of the country, but an initiative by state Treasurer Richard Moore is welcomed by those in the housing industry. In his announcement, Moore said he wants his mortgage protection plan to create more transparencies in an effort to let homeowners know exactly what they’re getting into and avoid issues that could lead to foreclosures in the future.

Two Marine reservists were killed in a fiery car crash over the weekend. According to a report by State Highway Patrol Trooper B.R. Simmons, Evan A. Tucker, 22, was driving a 1998 Subaru west along West River Road when he ran off the right side of the road at about 12:42 a.m. on Sunday.

Army Pvt. Prentice G. McNeil has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

1153.Officials teetering on mandatory water limits
Franklinton water department and other staff are keeping a close eye on the town’s receding reservoir, wondering if they’ll have to take a harder line on water preservation. Earlier this month, staff asked its residents to voluntarily take measures to conserve water as heat and humidity combined to cause a dip in the town’s upper reservoir.

Traffic was snarled along N.C. Highway 56 on Thursday afternoon when a tanker carrying fertilizer overturned. The truck was carrying biomass from Novozymes in Franklinton to a nearby farm to be sprayed as fertilizer when the tanker overturned at about 12:30 p.m.

1196.Murder/suicide in Louisburg
Investigators were putting together the pieces of a murder/suicide Tuesday morning that left two people dead and one injured. Officers responded to an 8:15 a.m. shots-fired call at Phelps Staffing off Bickett Boulevard. They found Amy Calamaco Alvarez, 22, dead, and her shooter, Jerold Lee, 26, dead next to her from a self-inflicted wound. Another woman, Heather Miller, 30, was found in the parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound to the hip. She was taken to Franklin Regional Medical Center before being taken to UNC Hospitals.
