2301.Suspect gives police wrong ID, increases his charges
A Louisburg man who gave authorities the slip in a cold, dank swamp was misidentified in a previous edition. According to an amended report by Dep. Samuel Zuniga, he spotted a red pickup truck on N.C. 561 heading toward Halifax, loaded down with scrap metal. The driver, who identified himself as Christopher G. Solomon, 25, was not wearing a seat belt — which prompted the stop.

LOUISBURG -- Louisburg High School’s boys soccer team pushed into a tie for second place in the Northern Carolina Conference with a pair of victories this week over Warren County. Tuesday on the road, the Warriors topped WCHS by a 7-0 score. Louisburg was never threatened after Chase Ragland found the back of the net just 45 seconds in.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested one person and are looking for another suspect in a drug case. Investigators executed search warrants on an apartment on West River Road and at a home in the 300 block of Honeysuckle Lane in the Youngsville area on April 27 after getting complaints of drug sales from the two locations.

FRANKLIN COUNTY — By week’s end, animal control workers were finding new homes for roosters after searching through a secluded area and swamp to round up those responsible for making the fowls fight to the death.Acting on a tip, Deputy Kevin Perry and Animal Control Officer Danny Howard responded to an isolated property in the 2000 block of Rocky Ford Road in the early morning hours of April 13, breaking up a cockfighting ring.

Congresswoman Renee Ellmers visited Franklin Regional Medical Center in Louisburg on Thursday. Her visit was not announced in advance. This was Ellmers’ first visit to the facility and it included a presentation, question-and-answer session, and tour. Much of the discussion was focused on Franklin Regional’s community impact, including $4.4 million of free care given in 2010, as well as $6.5 million in unreimbursed Medicare costs.

RETIRING PRINCIPAL. Robin Faulkner was surprised with a lot of extra guests -- family, county colleagues, and former BHS staff and administration -- at the June 10 Bunn High School staff luncheon. Mayor Marsha Strawbridge presented Faulkner with a Proclamation of Appreciation, recognizing her 28 years of service at Bunn High School. Special guests included all former principals of Bunn High School since June 1973. In 42 years, BHS has had only four principals.

Franklinton police made two DWI arrests last week. In the first case, Officer Terry Pearce and Sgt. W.B. Bulloch came upon a grey vehicle heading South on Main Street with a headlight out. When they stopped the vehicle at about 1 a.m. on Nov. 9, they realized the driver, Steven C. Webb, was driving with a revoked license.

LOUISBURG -- Later this month, Louisburg College will host a forum focusing on the events of school desegregation that changed the face of Franklin County.Edith Anderson, a teacher on the front lines of desegregation, recalled how dangerous it all was."[We had] neighbors who had sued to go to the school, Louisburg High, and a bomb ... was thrown at our house [by mistake]," Anderson recalled in interviews that serve as the basis for Oral History Project cultivated by Louisburg College's Tar River Center for History and Culture.

State Rep. Bobbie Richardson, D-Franklin, visited Novant Health Franklin Medical Center recently and her visit prompted a discussion about the impact of placing a cap on the sales and use tax exemption that was discussed in the recent legislative session. Richardson’s visit came on the heels of a decision to cap the tax exemption for not-for-profit businesses at $45 million, a move that does not yet impact Novant.

2349.Several drug cases keeping county deputies busy
A Youngsville area man had his first appearance in court this week after a wreck on his scooter led to drug charges.The case against Michael A. Sills, 45, of Stephen Taylor Road, was continued until Nov. 25.Deputies charged him with possession with intent to sell and deliver crack cocaine, maintaining a vehicle for the sale of a controlled substance and felony possession of cocaine following a wreck on Aug. 24 that sent him to Franklin Medical Center.

Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a handful of break-ins. The afternoon of Oct. 9, John Sweder Jr. reported that someone broke into a property in the 100 block of Hill Court near Youngsville. According to the report by Sgt. Dwayne Collins, a 42-inch flat screen television was reported missing.

2356.NEW LIFE IN A NEW LOCATION
The owners of Louisburg's New Life Fitness Center held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday to officially mark the opening of their new 16,000-square-foot facility. The fitness center, which had been located on South Main Street, is now located on Johnson Street in Louisburg in what was once the Lowes shopping center. The center has been completely remodeled to include areas for various types of exercise equipment, weight and other fitness training as well as aerobics, yoga and martial arts classes.

Speed limits downtown and parking near Louisburg High School were the main items of business Monday night for the Louisburg town council. Southerland, Keyshawn Jones was driving a sport utility vehicle north on U.S. 401 at about 3:20 p.m. on June 12 when he ran off the road to the right, came back onto the roadway and crossed the center line.He crashed into a minivan heading south driven by Claudia Berry.

Franklin County 4-H'ers were busy this fall as they prepared their crafts, produce, poultry, and livestock for the 2016 NC State Fair.Franklin County had an overwhelming 73 youth participate in the State Fair this year. There were 31 youth who entered items in crafts and 38 kids that showed livestock. Some of the categories that these youth showed or entered items into included but are not limited to: livestock (cows, goats, sheep, and hogs), poultry, crafts in the 4-H division and other divisions, culinary, produce and canned items.

LOUISBURG -- Efforts to restore access to medical care in Franklin County have reportedly stepped up dramatically in recent days, especially after both Franklin County and Louisburg officials reached a tentative agreement with Novant Health, Inc., about the now-closed Franklin Memorial Hospital and its operating license.Some officials were saying off-the-record by mid-week that talks have been initiated with other providers with an eye toward bringing back at least an emergency room with some critical care beds plus some type of mental health facility, but nothing has been finalized.

Narcotics agents arrested Roger Wayne House the afternoon of Jan. 23 after finding a significant amount of drugs in his home. House was slated to appear in court on Tuesday.
