Wal-Mart developers withdrew site plans for a new super center, saying the town’s development guidelines are too restrictive. GFD Management Inc., of Cary had presented the town with plans for a Wal-Mart Supercenter and a handful of out parcels planned on just more than 70 acres at the corner of U.S. Highway 401 and N.C. Highway 56 behind D & J Automotive.

Alice Morgan Person recreated in an upcoming book
A Franklin County businesswoman who was decades ahead of her time will live again.
The “Life Out of the Ordinary” of Alice Morgan Person will be the focus of a presentation Nov. 28 in Louisburg by David W. Hursh, head music librarian and associate professor at East Carolina University’s J. Y. Joyner Library in Greenville.
He will speak during the Person Place annual meeting at 6 p.m.

Stomach flu outbreak at Royal
More than 100 Royal Elementary School students and more than a dozen staff members missed school this week because of the stomach flu. According to county Health Director Philip Tarte, about 50 students missed school on Wednesday and 116 students missed school on Thursday.

West River Road bridge bids are let
The state Department of Transportation began advertising a project to repair a roadway washed out in June. In June, rains from Tropical Storm Ernesto created enough rushing water underneath West River Road at Buffaloe Creek to wipe out a culvert that supported the integrity of the road.

Gold Sand chief resigns
Gold Sand’s fire chief stepped down on Thursday after 12 years in a leadership position. Chris Edwards had been assistant chief for 10 years and the department’s chief for the past two years but left, saying on Friday that there were issues with the department’s governing board.

BUNN — After winning the Northern Carolina Conference Tournament for the first time, the Bunn Ladycats placed three performers on the All-NCC volleyball squad. BHS’ all-league selections were senior Paige Murashige, junior Brandy Driver and sophomore Jessica Barker. Junior Maghan Place was an honorable-mention pick for the Ladycats.

LC’s spike coach has resigned
Less than one week after the conclusion of the best season in the program’s resurgence, Jenna Hinton has resigned as the volleyball coach at Louisburg College. Hinton, who came to LC from Kerr-Vance Academy three years ago, has accepted a full-time position with the Triangle Volleyball Club out of Morrisville.

FARMVILLE — Bunn, fighting for its postseason existence, held Farmville Central to 107 total yards, including 32 on the ground, to defeat the Jaguars 7-0 Friday in the second round of the Class 2-A State Playoffs on the FC campus in Pitt County. The sixth-seeded Wildcats, now 12-1 overall, will be at home for the rest of the Eastern portion of the playoffs -- as long as they keep winning.
