GUILTY
A Louisburg man was sentenced to between 13 and 16 years after being convicted of killing Bunn teenager Marc Philippeaux.
Authorities charged Antione Perry with first-degree murder after he and two other suspects were arrested in the early morning hours of Jan. 15, 2005.
Perry was convicted of firing the fatal shot that killed Philippeaux while he and about 150 other people celebrated a Bunn basketball victory at a house party.

Louisburg College accreditation under threat; finances off
Louisburg College has begun efforts to tighten its belt and raise money to get out from under a financial warning that could impact its accreditation.
On Dec. 10, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Colleges placed the school on a six-month warning, claiming the school’s financial stability is shaky.

County attorney Darnell Batton resigns position
Franklin County’s attorney tendered his letter of resignation on Friday, effectively leaving his post on Jan. 31.
Darnell Batton has been the county’s attorney for 15 years.
He said he needed to resign because the workload is growing impossible to juggle between the county’s demands and the demands of clients in his private practice in Louisburg.

Cox has big visions for downtown Louisburg
Stepping carefully on worn wooden floors while dodging debris, Ron Cox uses a flashlight to illuminate a familiar darkness.
He saw it when he set out to renovate the old barbershop building at the corner of Main and Market streets.
Now, that building is home to a thriving barber, a church congregation, a clothing retailer and another business on the way.

Library adds PBS videos
On Jan. 1, library patrons at Franklin County Library will have free access to quality educational and entertainment programming from PBS over the Internet.
As a member of NC LIVE, North Carolina’s statewide library consortium, the library will provide on-site and home access to nearly 250 PBS programs, including Ken Burns’ “Baseball” and “The Civil War,” as well as the Emmy award-winning series “American Experience” and “Frontline.”

New laws cover drunken driving, school bus safety, more
Many of the new laws that we approved this past session went into place at the beginning of this month.
Several of them are designed to protect drivers and other people who use our roads. Last year more than 1,500 people were killed on North Carolina roads, many because of drunken driving. These new laws will help us save lives.

Shane Mitchell announces intent to run for commissioner’s seat
The filing period doesn’t open until February, but Franklinton resident Shane Mitchell has let it be known that he will run for a county commission seat.
Mitchell, who currently sits as chair of the county’s Economic Development Commission, said he wants a chance to serve on the county’s top governing board.

Franklinton unfires Garner; instead, she retires
FRANKLINTON — The town Board of Commissioners rescinded an earlier vote to fire its manager, instead allowing her to retire for medical reasons.
The decision allows Garner to rely on her tenure in government to get medical insurance, at her expense, through the UNC School of Government.

Back On Track?
FRANKLINTON -- Following a disappointing loss last Friday to Louisburg -- along with a general slow start to the season -- the Franklinton Red Rams returned to practice Monday with a renewed sense of vigor.
And the Red Rams carried that passion into Tuesday’s home contest against North Johnston.
Franklinton, in one of its most well-rounded performances of the season, held the Panthers scoreless in the first quarter and went on to post a 54-39 victory -- the second of the campaign for the Red Rams.
