Franklin County commissioners agreed to let architects use what discretionary funds they have available to make the new animal shelter more environmentally friendly.
Architect Walter Vick updated the board on the progress of the $1.2-million project, which is still on track to be completed in July.

Burning the midnight oil
The art of compromise takes time, and there isn’t much of it left when it comes to getting Long Mill Elementary School open.
The Board of Education on Monday night spent more than four hours in a work session to agree on three reassignment maps for the opening of Long Mill Elementary on Aug. 25.
Just before midnight, the board agreed on one of the maps proposed by a study committee — a pick from that group’s three recommendations (ES11, previously ES9.35.68) — and on two other options that were hashed out with the help of a spreadsheet, which projected variation on a screen throughout the night.

Rest home rape case: plea deal accepted
A Castalia man accused of raping a mentally disabled woman was sentenced Monday.
After accepting the plea agreement, Superior Court Judge Kenneth Titus sentenced Kevin G. Brake, 45, to between 42 and 51 months in jail on a charge of patient abuse and neglect.
He was initially charged with second-degree rape.

Kelley murder: Bullock sentenced
A 20-year-old man who neighbors said terrorized them in what appeared to be a fit of schizophrenia was sentenced to prison this week.
Brandon Bullock, who was 18 when police allege he killed Leroy Kelley Sr. in October 2005, pled guilty to second-degree murder in Franklin County Superior Court on Monday.
Bullock’s sentence of between 94 months and 122 months in jail was the range of punishment because of mitigating factors — his mental health.

Franklinton commissioners debate tax-dollar grants
FRANKLINTON — Town commissioners began the whittling process last week, trying to cut nearly $34,000 to balance their proposed 2008-09 budget.
As proposed, expenses outpace expected revenues and commissioners began a nearly three-hour work session last Monday with a line-by-line review of the 23-page draft.

SpringLitter Sweep
The N.C. Department of Transportation is preparing for its 2008 SpringLitter Sweep, which will be Saturday, April 19, through Saturday, May 3. During the statewide litter sweep, NCDOT maintenance crews, Adopt-A-Highway groups, N.C. Department of Correction inmate crews, community service workers and other volunteers will take to the highways to remove roadside litter.

EXCEPTIONAL TALENTS
The Women’s Club of North Carolina sponsors an Art Contest every year with prize money accompanying first-, second- and third-place winners. Franklinton High School students have entered art in this event for three years. This year students entered about 80 works of art. The contest is divided into three levels: local, district and state. The Women’s Club hires judges and the local chapter presents trophies and medals to the winners. The local first-place winners are selected to compete for awards in a district contest . Out of nine possible fine art categories, Franklinton sent seven first-place local winners to the district competition winning five first places, one second place and one third place.

Louisburg surges to TRAC links conquest

A man on a mission, Rooney entered the pizza parlor and looked around, sure that he would find the elusive Bueller.
There Bueller was -- or so Rooney thought -- standing beside a video-game machine.

Carolina Mudcats caught by BayBears
MOBILE, ALA. -- The Mobile BayBears capitalized on seven Carolina walks shutting out the Mudcats 5-0 at Hank Aaron Stadium Sunday afternoon, handing Carolina its first loss of the season in a Class AA Southern League baseball matchup.
