County starts hashing out budget
Franklin County commissioners began poring over a budget proposal Wednesday that proposes a spending increase and adds nearly 30 new positions while not increasing the tax rate.
Relying on an expanded tax base and an improved collection rate, staff expect to pull $2.78 million from the county’s savings account (fund balance) to cover the gap between expenses — $68.7 million — and revenues — $65.9 million.

Home invasion, murder suspects headed to court
The case against a clan of suspects charged with a home invasion and murder has been declared exceptional because the sheer volume of defendants will take it more time to proceed through the court system.
Investigators arrested seven people earlier this year, charging them with the March 16 death of Anthony Perry.
Court officials said suspects are slated to appear in court this coming week for bond hearings.

Franklinton water rate hike could affect county budget
Spring and summer often spark pool-side water fights, but Franklinton and Franklin County commissioners are apparently waging theirs in meeting halls.
Prompted by a warning from the state Treasurer’s Office, Franklinton staff has proposed raising water usage rates by 40 percent — from $4.75 per 1,000 gallons to $6.65 per 1,000 gallons.

Thomas murder trial on calendar
The case against a Franklin County man charged with killing his estranged girlfriend is on the superior court trial calendar this coming week, but his fate will likely depend on a psychological evaluation.
Last month, a judge ordered Christopher Steven Thomas to undergo a psychological evaluation to determine if the state could proceed with its murder case.

Franklinton man sentenced to three years
A Franklinton man who faced charges of assaulting an officer and being an habitual felon was sentenced last week to spend about 3 years in jail.
Kenneth Lamar McGhee, 41, pled guilty last week to assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and malicious conduct by a prisoner from an August 2009 case, and habitual DWI offender from an incident in February where McGhee tried to elude police during a traffic stop.

United Way Community Grants are under review
Six panels of volunteers are reviewing 25 Community Impact Grant applications for 2010 United Way of Franklin County funding.
The grant requests total $159,497, and the UWFC has designated $128,600 for the 2010 allocations.

$20,093.68 Grant Awarded to Youngsville Rescue & E.M.S.
RALEIGH - Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Wayne Goodwin announced that the Youngsville Rescue & E.M.S. was awarded a $20,093.68 grant through the 2009 Volunteer Rescue/EMS Fund from the State of North Carolina.
The check will be mailed to Chief Scott Wheeler to be used by the department to purchase needed equipment, which must be approved by the Department of Insurance Office of State Fire Marshal.

Third suspect arrested in home invasion
Franklin County sheriff’s deputy arrested the third suspect in an armed home invasion.
Deputies arrested Christopher Jason Sparks, 30, of Middlesex on Tuesday evening, a week after it was reported that two armed men broke into a home at 12 Pilot Bypass.

Accused murderer could get plea deal
A Franklin County man accused of murdering a man over $10 could be getting a plea deal this coming week.
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies arrested Gregory Jackson, 53, in February, alleging that he killed Alton Johnson, 24, of Vaiden Road.

Before the month of May leaves us, I must tell you about the splendid educational program which I was invited to at Louisburg Elementary School.
It was the well-known celebration of Cinco de Mayo, which, as the name tells us, is celebrated on the fifth day of May. It is a commemoration of the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862; it is not the day of the independence of Mexico, as most people believe.

Crudup resigns at NVHS
HENDERSON -- Northern Vance football coach Cedric Crudup is stepping down after seven years at the school and four seasons at the helm of the football program.
Crudup is a Franklin County native who prepped at Bunn under David Howle in the 1990s.
Crudup, a physical education teacher at Northern, also served as boys track coach for the duration of his tenure.
