Stone retiring as Register of Deeds
The Franklin County Democratic Party has called a special meeting to determine who will be the county’s next Register of Deeds.
Linda Stone is planning to retire from the position before her term is up after being Register of Deeds the past 10 years and serving in the office for 30.

Former Girl Scout camp could become county park
Franklin County’s Parks and Recreation staff anticipate bringing a park proposal to commissioners early next year.
When Louisburg resident Edgar Owens died last January, he left in his will money for a county park.
Owens’ estate stood at about $1 million and about 80 percent of that was designated for a county park.

Finances a factor in hiring assistant county manager
The Franklin County Board of Commissioners approved a new assistant manager position in the current budget, but financial considerations will determine if that post is filled before the end of the fiscal year.
The position, which Harris previously filled, was eliminated in 2003 — with Harris still in it.

In today’s volatile economic times, county staff have already begun behind-the-scenes work for the upcoming budget year.
By February, they anticipate bringing commissioners into retreats and work sessions to hammer out a 2011-12 budget in demanding economic times.

Coyotes becoming a problem
Franklin County residents are dealing with more and more wily coyotes.
And there’s nothing funny about it.
The hardy predators have been carving out a territory in Franklin County for some time now and residents say they’ve seen and heard more coyotes than any other time in recent memory.

FRMC nurses receive certification
Seven nurses at Franklin Regional Medical Center were recently certified in advanced burn life support (ABLS). This certification program is provided by the American Burn Association.
The nurses who received this accomplishment are: Karla Banks, Lynn Carey, Kevin Clark, Donna Haynes, Donna Perry, Sandie Rosenthal and Norma Smithwick.

Grinch steals Louisburg woman’s Christmas gifts
Louisburg police arrested a man accused of robbery at gunpoint.
According to investigators, Korey Deshaun High, 21, of 111 Grant Street, Apt. B, is alleged to have come across a 16-year-old and 18-year-old the evening of Dec. 22.
According to Capt. Jason Abbott, High pulled out a gun on the two victims at a home at Mineral Springs Road.

Retired school personnel work toward progress
Since Nov. 3, 1980, the organization called Franklin County Retired School Personnel (FCRSP) has been working together for progress.
I have never seen so many folks with so much talent and creativity giving their time to do so many hours of volunteer work. They are just amazing, using as many as 1,000 hours of voluntary work a year to help the community and churches in the area.

Enough is enough — time for snow to melt
HAPPY NEW YEAR! And that greeting goes double if advance weather forecasts for the first day of the new year calling for a daytime high of 63 degrees followed by an overnight low of 50 pan out, even if it does rain a little bit.
We’ve already experienced as much or more ice and snow than normal for an entire winter season and winter has only just begun, officially at any rate. I’m ready for Spring already, although we may have a long wait in store for us before that comes about.

BUTNER -- Leesville Road’s girls basketball team didn’t even know until earlier this week that it would be competing in the South Granville Holiday Tournament.
The Pride’s opportunity only came when Wayne Country Day dropped out after heavy snowfall forced the beginning of the tournament to be pushed back from Monday to Wednesday.
