Hostage situation or a false report?
FRANKLINTON — Police are determining whether to file charges against a Wake Forest man who alleged his friend was being held at gunpoint.
About seven officers responded to the apparent location, the Food Lion parking lot in Franklinton, but found no signs of a problem or hostage situation.

Board meeting rescheduled due to animal control lawsuit
Personal and legal conflicts forced the county’s animal advisory board to reschedule its planned meeting on Wednesday night.
The board met on March 9 to discuss concerns brought forth by Jessica Ruiz, who alleges that breakdowns in animal control policy and procedure led to the death of a family pet.

Man pleads guilty to store break-ins
A Franklin County man avoided a lengthier jail sentence this week after pleading guilty to breaking into convenience stores.
Paul Wiggins’ attorney, Johnny Williamson, said his client’s crime spree was the result of a female enchantress who enticed him to steal.
Sheriff’s deputies arrested Wiggins and Augusta Lynn Harner in September 2010, alleging they broke into Justice Grocery on N.C. 581 and Sid Champion’s Grocery on White Level Road.

Bunn High student wins design contest
A Bunn High School student, Jacob Wilson, has won the award for this T-shirt design for the 38th International Whistlers Convention, which is being sponsored by the Franklin County Historical Society.
Wilson, better known as Jake, is 18 and the son of Jim and Faye Wilson.
He and other students submitted designs from the Sports and Entertainment Marketing class taught by Randy Whitley.

Bradley seeking to reduce law enforcement’s authority at checkpoints
Rep. Glen Bradley filed a bill in part hoping that legislation to limit police powers at checkpoints would spark debate.
The response from local law enforcement agencies is unanimous — they don’t like it.
House Bill 375 would make all checking stations illegal, save for those that are established to capture someone during a manhunt.

The Franklin County Democratic Party will hold its annual County Convention on Saturday, April 9, at the Franklin County Courthouse Annex, Main Street, Louisburg. Delegate registration is from 9-10 a.m. The convention will convene at 10 a.m. All delegates elected at the recent local March precinct meetings are asked to attend the convention to represent their precinct.

Franklinton man arrested on drug charges
Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Franklinton man on drug charges.
According to a report by Dep. Antoine Eaton, he was patrolling an undeveloped area of Kendall Forest Subdivision in the Franklinton area — an area noted for drug activity — when he came upon a red car parked on the side of the road.

Berger and Mahoney team up for US 401
Even though we’re playing against a stacked deck -- or at least an improperly shuffled one -- there was plenty to cheer about Monday at that Department of Transportation hearing in Oxford.
Franklin County had more folks to show up and speak their mind than any other county -- and what they want is for U.S. 401 to be completed in Franklin County sooner rather than later.

LOUISBURG -- Following a pair of first-half goals from sharpshooter Whitney Bunn, the Bunn Ladycats appeared to be well on their way to a victory over host Louisburg on Wednesday evening in a crucial Northern Carolina Conference girls soccer showdown.

LOUISBURG -- Louisburg College stepped out of Region X baseball action Wednesday for a home meeting against Stanly Community College.
The visiting Stanly club was able to defeat Louisburg by a 6-2 margin at Frazier Field on the LC campus.
J.T. Wauford got the start on the hill for the Hurricanes and worked four frames on the nine-inning matchup.

HENDERSON -- Louisburg High School earned its second victory over Southern Vance in a one-week span as the Warriors topped the Raiders by a 6-3 score on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference boys tennis match at Fox Pond Park.
Last week, the Warriors, competing at home, were 7-2 winners versus the Raiders.
