IT’S OPEN!
With four snips of a ribbon, the new Franklinton High School building opened Thursday night. Doing the snipping honors were (from the left) County Commission Chair Sidney Dunston, Schools Superintendent Dr. Eddie Ingram; FHS Principal Charles Fuller and State Superintendent of Schools Dr. June Atkinson. The school is built to handle 1,200 students but can be easily expanded to 1,600 as the need arises.

Sheriff’s deputies arrest escapee after manhunt
A Franklin County man compounded his legal problems after leading authorities on a manhunt.
Jonathan Tanner, 21, was additionally charged with escaping from custody after a prison break on Thursday afternoon.
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies were transporting Tanner to jail at about 2 p.m. on Thursday on charges of breaking and entering and larceny.

Franklinton gives out-of-town water customers a better rate
FRANKLINTON — Town commissioners agreed to cut out-of-town water customers a break.
By unanimous decision, commissioners agreed to cut the rate from $29.92 — double the in-town rate — to $17.95, which is 20 percent more than the in-town rate.
The decision was prompted by staff finding a calculation error in the budget and by customers who cried foul.

Meeting scheduled to discuss water issues
FRANKLINTON — Town officials will host a special-called meeting next week to discuss its water standoff with Franklin County.
On Tuesday morning, Franklin County Manager Angela Harris sent town officials and staff a letter notifying them that the county had lost interest in purchasing the town’s water and sewer system.

Domestic dispute leads to car chase, downed phone lines
FRANKLINTON — Police arrested a Kittrell area man who led his father on a vehicle chase before crashing into a telephone pole — knocking out the utility for the better part of a day.
Terrell F. Rodgers, 18, was charged with hit and run, leaving the scene of an accident; aggressive driving, failure to stop at a red light, misdemeanor injury to real property, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Lightning blamed for Franklinton house fire
Franklinton investigators called in some help to investigate a weekend house fire.
It turns out Mother Nature was the culprit.
According to investigators, a storm that swept through the area the evening of Aug. 14 brought lightning with it.
That lightning is alleged to have hit a home at 410 N. Cheatham Street around midnight.

This incorrect information was published in the “Back To School” section of the Aug. 17 edition of the Times. The correct time for the Open House is 3 to 6 p.m. on Aug. 24, not 5-7 p.m.

Need exceeds number of backpacks
The “Build A Backpack” program for Franklin County students in need of school supplies is wrapping up Sunday at Walmart in Louisburg – and additional backpack donations are needed.
“We have seen a great effort from the community to collect school supplies, and we have identified more than 290 students in the county who need backpacks and supplies,” United Way of Franklin County Board of Directors Chairman Dale Byrns said.

Deputies looking for suspects in a number of home break-ins
Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Franklin County man on drug and fraud charges.
According to a report, Dep. Damion Linder was dispatched to Oak Forest Lane after receiving a report that Paul Fogg, 46, was trespassing.
According to the report, his ex-girlfriend told authorities that Fogg came by to retrieve belongings, but refused to leave when she asked.

County should have never considered purchasing Franklinton’s water plant
So, Franklin County is abandoning its plan to purchase the Franklinton water system.
Wow, that’s as big a surprise as the sun rising this morning -- and expecting it to set this evening!
Not to be facetious, but this is a decision that should never have had to be made -- and which comes as no surprise to anyone remotely familiar with the situation.

Beekeepers are informative, but in the end, not persuasive
It was bribery, pure and simple bribery!
And it happened right out in the open, right in the Louisburg town hall — and not a single person complained.
Certainly, I didn’t.
Of course, I contend I wasn’t influenced at all by the bribe which consisted of some really delicious chocolate fudge — sweetened with honey — that was being doled out to those attending the meeting.

No change needed in communications tower ordinance
GOOD MORNING: Thought for the day: Now that the Louisburg Town Council has decided to rethink a new ordinance limiting bee-keeping within the city limits, maybe the solution would be to consider relocating over-the-limit bee-hives to Oakwood Cemetery where there are plenty of flowers, or used to be anyway before the town trimmed all the bushes.

BUNN -- Given the back-and-forth nature of the match, it was almost a given that the winner of Thursday’s Bunn-Southern Nash boys soccer event would be determined by a single quick dose of heroics.
For Bunn, that magic came courtesy of Dionisio Lugo, who took a long pass from Dane Norris up the right side and sent a low-left shot into the goal with 12 minutes left to give the Wildcats a 3-2 decision over the Firebirds in a non-league matchup at the BHS Soccer Complex.

Mudcats claim wild SL matchup at Chattanooga
CHATTANOOGA, TENN. -- Miguel Rojas hit a sacrifice fly in the 12th inning as Carolina outlasted Chattanooga 12-11 in the fourth-longest game in Mudcats history on Thursday night at AT&T Field in a wild Class AA Southern League baseball game.
Neftali Soto tripled off the bench to start the 12th inning, with Rojas slicing a flyball to right to bring him home, lifting Carolina to within seven of first-place Chattanooga with 17 to play.

Patrol Stroll slated for Sept. in Raleigh

Ladycats earn third spike victory in a row
BUNN -- Bunn High School finished the first week of the volleyball regular season with an unblemished mark following a three-game home victory Thursday against the Wilson Beddingfield Lady Bruins.
Scores were 25-15, 25-22 and 25-16 as the Ladycats finished Week One with a 3-0 record.
Bunn served at an impressive 92 percent clip for the match, led by perfect efforts from Brianna Gatson (12-of-12) and Patika Venable (9-of-9).

Southern Vance Rallies Past Louisburg
HENDERSON -- A slow start didn’t prevent Southern Vance from winning its football season opener at home against Louisburg Friday night.
Louisburg scored first and led 10-6 at halftime before a big third quarter put the Raiders up 19-10.
Southern maintained that advantage until the fourth quarter when Chris Henderson ran in for a short touchdown.
