Multi-agency effort results in drug bust
Franklin County’s gang and narcotics unit joined forces with agents from the State Bureau of Investigation and the Wake Forest Police Department to arrest two men on drug trafficking charges.
Terrance Edell Morgan, 32, and Derrick Gerard Brown, 31, were both placed in the Franklin County Jail on Aug. 31 — held on half a million dollar bond, each.

Man competent to stand trial for attempted murder
A superior court judge has ruled that a Youngsville man is competent to stand trial on charges that he tried to kill his girlfriend by setting her on fire.
Gary Otto Normand, 58, is slated to next appear in court on Sept. 21 to face charges of attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon and first-degree arson.

Stepping up to the plate
Organizers of the 2nd annual Local Food Roast had a lot on their plate.
And so did those who went by the Franklin County Farmers Market on Friday to buy a plate, supporting the United Way, 4-H, local growers and the community.
“It went so well the first time,” said United Way of Franklin County Executive Director Kathy Harrelson, “we figured we’d just make it part of our campaign kick-off event.”

Emergency radio towers back on county’s agenda
A month after commissioners asked staff to come up with a better way to approve emergency communications towers, the matter is back on the agenda.
And so is a proposal to cut residents out of the process.
At the Board of Commissioners Aug. 15 meeting, the planning board staff presented commissioners with a change to a text amendment that would make emergency communications towers a permitted use in the county’s zoning districts.

Assistant principal hired for Bunn High School
Hassan T. Kingsberry has been named an assistant principal at Bunn High School. Kingsberry began his post at Bunn High School Aug. 18.
“I am extremely excited to be a part of the BHS family,” Kingsberry said. “The students and staff are a great group, and they have been very welcoming. I have already been working very hard this school year and look forward to a wonderful year!”

Appraisal gives county more ammunition in contract lawsuit against Franklinton
The $40,000 that Franklin County spent to appraise Franklinton’s water and sewer system wasn’t a total waste.
The county’s attorneys used one of the findings to bolster its lawsuit against the town.
Both sides have been embroiled in a disagreement about their water contract since last September, when Franklinton shut off water service to the county because of a drought.

Ingram misunderstood by state school superintendent
The new Franklinton High School likely will be a lot cleaner than some readers of a story in the Raleigh News & Observer might suspect.
The daily newspaper ran a page 1 story Thursday on the effects of budget cutbacks on area schools and quoted State Superintendent June Atkinson as saying that Franklin County “doesn’t have the money to pay for custodial services” for the new FHS.

FINAL ADJUSTMENT!
Workers were putting the new gazebo near Louisburg Town Hall in its final location as this photograph was snapped. The new gazebo, with a bit more metal in the railings than the old one, replaces one that had been a downtown fixture for many years but fell victim to the weather and the occasional vandal.

Brayden Land had a big haul this summer, including an 83-pound watermelon from the family’s Land Farm, which is south of Louisburg. The melon was from the first patch that the eight-year-old Land planted this past season.

Police investigating copper thefts
Louisburg police arrested a Franklinton woman, charging her with stealing a sport utilty vehicle from Joyner Park.
And investigators are looking for a suspect in another theft at the park, believing the two suspects are in cahoots.

VGCC recognizes 21 Medical Assistant graduates at pinning
Vance-Granville Community College held a pinning ceremony for its 2011 Medical Assisting program graduates on Aug. 5 at the college’s Franklin County Campus in Louisburg, where the program is conducted. As VGCC’s program is nationally accredited, graduates are now eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants’ (AAMA) certification examination to become Certified Medical Assistants.

County commissioners using ambush tactics to change the rules
Be warned — the ambush is set yet again!
Buried on the county commission agenda for its Tuesday, Sept. 6, meeting is another attempt to ram through an ordinance that should offend every landowner in Franklin County.
It’s a revised attempt to give county bureaucrats the power to put a radio tower anywhere they darn well please without holding so much as a public hearing — or even informing nearby property owners about their plans.

Ah-h-h, for the good old days, say back about 2005, when it seemed like everybody who was anybody read the local newspaper.
Back in 2005, a national poll found that an amazing 81 percent of people read a local newspaper each week.
These days, the consensus is that people don’t read newspapers, that we’re old-fashioned and out-of-date.
WAIT, WAIT! Something is wrong here! Terribly wrong.

Hazel Collier and husband were a local institution
GOOD MORNING: Here it is, September again already. Monday is Labor Day and we’ve got less than three weeks before the first day of fall.
What all of this boils down to is the fact that we’re in the “short rows,” as the saying goes, so far as summer is concerned and quite frankly, I could stand a bit cooler weather for a change.

Known for his ability to ad-lib and use his speed out of the spread offense to avoid defenders, Cooke collected 260 total yards (102 rushing and 158 passing) to help the Wildcats score a 35-23 non-conference football victory Tuesday against Fike in a game that was rescheduled twice due to the weather.

Tennis season continues
BUNN -- Franklinton and Bunn tangled on Wednesday in an early-campaign match with plenty of implications in the Northern Carolina Conference girls tennis standings.
FHS swept the doubles matches and won all but one singles event en route to claiming an 8-1 decision over the Ladycats at the BHS Courts.
