Class of 2012: Diplomas in hand, ready for new horizons
Administrators, teachers, family and friends recognized 574 Franklin County seniors who earned their diplomas during commencement exercises on Saturday.

The 224 seniors marked the first graduating class of the new Franklinton High School.

Joy-riding teens steal carts, chased with axe
Sheriff’s deputies arrested three teens and were looking for another accused of damaging golf carts during a joyriding episode that ended when a club employee overtook one of the suspects with the aid of an axe.
Ronnie McGhee reported the incident the morning of June 8.
According to the report by Sgt. A.R. Roberts, McGhee, the maintenance supervisor at Green Hill Country Club off N.C. 39, was heading in to work when he opened a garage door and noticed something amiss.

One redistricting plan affects high schools
Two redistricting plans — one relatively simple and the other with far-reaching effects — were presented to the Franklin County Board of Education Monday night which unanimously accepted both and took them under study.
The two plans were created by a committee of consultant Jeff Tsai of North Carolina State University, parents, school officials and board members in anticipation of the creation of a new Franklinton Middle School beginning with the 2013 school year.

Pot-growing operation found near Rocky Ford
Franklin and Vance county deputies are looking for a man they say was responsible for growing more than 200 marijuana plants weighing more than 50 pounds.
With the State Highway Patrol providing surveillance by air, Franklin County deputies, along with officers from the Wake Forest Police Department, were performing marijuana eradication efforts when they came upon a suspected growing operation on farmland between Gillburg and Rocky Ford Road on the afternoon of June 4.

17 cadets earn BLET qualifications
Seventeen cadets graduated recently from the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) course at Vance-Granville Community College in a ceremony held in the Civic Center on Main Campus. After passing the state certification exam, all are authorized to work in any law enforcement agency in North Carolina.

Katherine Casey (Katie) Cunard of Charlotte and Boyce Webster Adams of Wingate, NC, were married at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 27, 2012, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wilmington, NC.
The bride is the daughter of Marianne and Dave Bright of Albemarle and Donna and Gary Cunard of Louisburg, NC. The groom is the son of Samuel W. Adams III of Emporia, Va., and the late Barbara W. Adams.

Jamie Lee Edwards and William Paul Wilson were married on Feb. 25, 2012 at Louisburg United Methodist Church. The traditional ceremony was officiated by the Rev. Earl Dulaney and the Rev. Patrick Fuller.
The bride is the daughter of Barbara Dickerson and Mr. and Mrs. Michael D. Edwards, all of Louisburg.
The groom’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. William Woodrow Wilson Jr. of Louisburg.

Teacher earns masters in business education degree
Tonya Morris McGhee, daughter of Thomas and Saundra Morris, received a Masters of Business Education degree from N.C. State University at its 125th Commencement on May 12.
Tonya also has an undergraduate degree from Thomas Edison State College in Trenton, N.J. She teaches middle school in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System.

A casino in the Burg, now that ought to be fun!
GOOD MORNING: Boy, Oh Boy! I’ll bet that new banner-type sign that has gone up in downtown Louisburg has raised some eyebrows, particularly on our staid town council.
The sign says simply: Coming Soon: CASINO. A Casino in downtown Louisburg? No, I’m not kidding.
Well, look at it this way. On the bright side, maybe it will employ a few folks and pay some taxes. But wouldn’t it have been fun to be a fly on the wall when town officials got their first peek at that sign?

Why is prayer not tolerated?
Because it is your prayer not mine. The prayer that got Franklin County Schools in trouble with the ACLU was heavily Evangelical.
I get the strong feeling that is what most Franklin County residents want when they talk about school prayer. We don’t have to go too far to offend that majority.

LC takes third at nationals
CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. -- Louisburg College closed in third place in the team standings following last Friday’s finale at the 72-hole NJCAA Division III Men’s Golf National Championships in Western New York.
The Hurricanes finished with 1244 strokes -- just two shots behind national runner-up Jamestown Community College. LC was also two strokes ahead of defending national champion Monroe Community College.

FRANKLINTON - Ray Edward Harris, Sr., age 82, died Monday, June 11, 2012 in Louisburg Nursing Center. He was a native of Emporia, Va., and was the son of the late Roger C. and Mary Clay Harris. Mr. Harris worked in road construction, he was a veteran of the US Marine Corps, a member of the American Legion Post 52 in Franklinton, member of the Franklinton Lions Club, former Lion of the Year and past president of the club. While living in Virginia, he worked with the Boy Scouts and coached baseball in the Chesapeake area. Ray was also a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church.
