Deputies break up dog fighting ring in northern Franklin
LOUISBURG — Sheriff’s deputies seized battered dogs and other evidence of a dog fighting operation in northern Franklin County this week.
Animal Control Director Taylor Bartholomew said it’s an activity that’s growing, but so is the resolve to stop it.
“I just want people to know that the sheriff’s office and animal control are serious about stopping this,” Bartholomew said. “We’re giving it more attention than ever before.

‘Tweaked’ attendance map okayed; creates Franklinton middle school
The Franklin County Board of Education wasted little time Monday night in approving a “hybrid” attendance map that alleviated the objections parents had to the two earlier versions of attendance areas for the district’s middle schools.
After an hour-long tour of the old Franklinton High School, which is to be converted into the district’s new middle school, the board approved a map designated as “3B.”

Shooting stopped by zoning rules
LOUISBURG — County planning staff responded to a noise complaint Sunday, putting a stop to shooting on a property that commissioners already said was not appropriate for a gun range.
Last week, commissioners refused to issue a special use permit that would have allowed Aaron Byrd and Eric Coombs to build a shooting range on 171 acres on Dunn Road in the Margaret Community east of Louisburg.

I am sad to say that according to Deborah Hoeflinger’s article on The Delta Kappa Gamma Bulletin for the fall 2012 (who is an excellent educator and professional from New Jersey), U.S. students were found deficient in these areas, placing them well below students from other countries.

Maybe it’s the weather, but holiday giving starting slow

Granted, very warm — very unseasonably warm — weather has kept many people out of the Christmas season so far this year.

Worrying about world’s end isn’t a healthy choice
It’s not too often that you can connect a story about the end of the world and health care, but here goes.
As most folks know, the Mayans hypothesized that the world would end in catastrophe on Dec. 21, 2012.
The theory has gained sufficient traction that plenty of people have either planned end-of-the-world parties, or have taken survival tendencies to the extreme — preparing bunkers to withstand a nuclear fallout or rationing foodstuffs for a year.

Bolten has plenty of hoops experience both as a player and a coach -- on the high school and college levels.

When he first saw her play during the recruiting process, Louisburg College women’s soccer coach Andy Stokes believed that Jessie Scales was the type of high-energy player who could put the Lady Hurricanes over the top in their long quest to win the Region X Championship.
Scales had certainly put up gaudy offensive numbers while helping Roanoke Rapids High School dominate the Northern Carolina Conference, but prep-level success doesn’t automatically translate into greatness in college.

East-West Football moved to High Point
GREENSBORO -- The North Carolina Coaches Association has announced that the 65th East-West All-Star Football Game will be played at High Point’s A.J. Simeon Stadium in July of 2013.
The All-Star Game, which has been played at Grimsley’s Jamieson Stadium in Greensboro for the previous 64 years, is moving due to a construction project at the traditional site.

Former Mudcats’ manager passes away
ZEBULON -- P.J. Carey, who managed the 2002 Carolina Mudcats when they were the Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, died last Friday night at the age of 59. Carey had been battling a long illness.
During his lone season at Five County Stadium, Carey guided the Mudcats to a 35-71 finish. His career in the Rockies’ organization spanned 13 years from 1993-2006.
