Gunshots exchanged in home invasion
LOUISBURG — A Franklin County resident shot a suspect while defending himself during a home invasion on Wednesday night.
By week’s end, investigators were waiting for Devin Riddick, 22, to recover from a gunshot wound before charging him with his role in the four-man burglary.
According to authorities, Riddick, his twin brother, Traven Riddick, Alexis Brown, 20, and Quasime Sidney, 23, approached a home on Whites Lane off N.C. 39 at about 10 p.m.

YOUNGSVILLE — Reluctantly, officials ruled that a developer violated town ordinances by conducting heavy construction on Saturdays.
However, immediate attempts to resolve the matter in a way that would let Peachtree efficiently complete development of East Woods of Patterson was thwarted by the town’s inability to follow its own governing rules.

Pricing, policy and practices helping preserve lives of pets
Changes in pricing, policy and practice ramped up adoptions at the county’s animal shelter this summer.
And thanks to some new-age technical savvy and old-fashioned customer service, more animals continue to find homes after the sheriff’s office took over the department.
“We want people to feel welcome and come by,” said Joni Grissom, who along with fellow Animal Control Officer Kimberly Gallaway, has worked to improve customer service and the office’s footprint in social media.

New airport hangar deal almost cleared for landing
LOUISBURG — Legal counsel for the airport advised board members this week that he’s close to finishing up a lease agreement that would bring a revenue generator to the property.
“I should have it ready by this week or next,” Pete Tomlinson said during the board’s meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 8.

Progress Energy donation gives community college a ‘jolt’
Vance-Granville Community College recently got a jolt from a power company.
Progress Energy presented the community college with a $7,500 for its Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund.
That brought the total donated by the company to the college over the past decade to $56,250.
The funds support VGCC scholarships as well as other projects.

Local man faces ‘pot’ growing charges; plants under house
Louisburg police arrested a man accused of growing marijuana underneath his house.
William Alfred Sullivan, 62, was arrested Jan. 4 and charged with possession with intent to manufacture sell and deliver marijuana, and maintaining a dwelling for the sale of a controlled substance.
Louisburg Police Capt. Jason Abbott said authorities got an anonymous call and when they investigated, located a dozen plants in the crawl space under Sullivan’s home in the 100 block of Carol Circle.

Deputy injured in wreck
A sheriff’s deputy was taken to the hospital following a wreck on Friday.
According to the sheriff’s office, Dep. Deney Buchanan was patrolling along Sledge Road near Lake Royale at about 10:30 a.m. when a vehicle approached.
The vehicle hydroplaned, hitting Buchanan’s cruiser on the front left near the passenger door.

Heather Lauren Joyner of Louisburg graduated from East Carolina University in Greenville on Dec. 14 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a minor in Child Development and Family Relations.
She is currently employed as interim director of the Boys and Girls Club, Jarvis Unit, in Pitt County and plans to attend post-graduate school in the near future to obtain her master’s degree.

Francis part of NC Hall of Fame induction

Terrell Lane drops road heartbreaker
BUTNER -- Terrell Lane’s girls had a chance to eclipse the .500 mark in Middle Athletic Conference action this season during a road matchup Thursday against the Butner-Stem Lady Falcons.
But it wasn’t to be as Butner-Stem rallied in the fourth quarter to edge the Lady Tornadoes by a 17-14 margin.
Terrell Lane is now 3-4 overall in the MAC.

One of Franklin County’s most veteran medical professionals, Dr. Paul Stewart, is retiring after more than 38 years of practicing dentistry in Louisburg.
A Louisburg native, Dr. Stewart, known to many as “Buddy,” is a 1966 graduate of Louisburg High School who went on to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry before graduating from the UNC-CH School of Dentistry in 1974.
