High bonds set in Philippeaux murder case
A Superior Court judge issued multi-million dollar bonds for two suspects charged with killing a Bunn teenager despite the objections of the victim’s mother. After listening to testimony from prosecutors, defense attorneys and the victim’s family on Thursday, Judge Carl Fox issued Charles Mayo a $2.5 million bond and Antione Perry a $5 million bond.

New elementary school progress challenges staffs

Legislators’ public forum on Tuesday
Residents will have a chance to hear experts talk about issues ranging from education to combating gang violence during a public forum slated next week. State Sen. Doug Berger and state Reps. Lucy Allen, Jim Crawford and Michael Wray combined to host the public forum and workshop, giving interested residents a chance to hear about issues and provide input, as well.

Louisburg College, VGCC: students return to classes
Officials and staff at two of the area’s colleges say enrollment has defied expectations for the spring semester.
Spring enrollment at Vance-Granville Community College is higher than its fall enrollment. Louisburg College numbers are lower than their fall enrollment, but the spring numbers met expectations and continue a five-year trend of increased enrollment at the school.

Consortium buys Johnson property
The Johnson family farm off U.S. Highway 401 in Louisburg has been sold to a Raleigh consortium. UMIYA RDU Inc. has bought 45.6-acres that make up two tracts for just more than $2 million, according to property heirs.

Variety show
“Famous” New Hope hot dogs, along with homemade french fries, will be sold at New Hope Christian Church on Saturday, Jan. 13, from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by a variety show at 6:30 p.m.
Proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
Yard Sale
Rock Spring Baptist Church Relay For Life team will have a yard sale Saturday, Jan. 27 (7 a.m. - until), between Jeffrey’s and Annie Lee’s on Highway 39 South. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.
Steak Dinner
Rock Spring Baptist Church Relay For Life team will be hosting a steak dinner Saturday, Feb. 17, to benefit the American Cancer Society. There will be a 5 - 6 p.m. sitting. Tickets are $20 a person or $35 a couple. Seating is limited.

LHS loses second-half lead; NE wins in OT

LOUISBURG -- Forget the heartfelt, holiday sentiment. Mike Holloman had a rather succint New Year’s thought Tuesday evening for his Louisburg College women’s basketball players.
