Tragic pursuit:
Three die, ending officer’s high-speed chase
FRANKLINTON — According to a state Highway Patrol report expected to be releasedWednesday, a Franklinton police officer violated the town’s pursuit policy when he engaged in a two-county chase that ended in a fiery head-on collision that killed three people.
Officer Michael Dunlap began chasing Guy Christopher Ayscue, 38, of Vance County, about 3 p.m. Saturday after seeing Ayscue speed through an intersection in the wrong lane of N.C. Highway 56 going past the Snackers gas station toward Granville County.

Family devastated, wants answers
CREEDMOOR — Mt. Energy Elementary School is where 9-year-old Maggie Rose Lunsford loved to read.
Mt. Energy is also a place that her 18-year-old sister, Linsay Erin Lunsford, a UNC-G freshman and a student of merit, could have wound up teaching.
Instead, their family and friends will gather at the school for a funeral tonight after the sisters were killed in a fiery wreck on their way home from a shopping spree Saturday afternoon.

Angela Harris picked as interim manager
The Franklin County Board of Commissioners agreed to bring back a familiar face, naming one-time assistant county manager Angela Harris to fill the top spot on an interim basis.
Harris served as an assistant manager but commissioners terminated that position in 2003 in a move that sparked controversy in the community and drove residents to protest the decision.

Gobble joins LC staff; Miller resigns
Former Louisburg Town Administrator C.L. Gobble has been named interim vice president of finance at Louisburg College following the abrupt resignation of Marvin Miller.
Miller, who served as finance director since September of 2004, resigned Friday, effective immediately, for personal reasons, according to Louisburg College spokeswoman Jade Biggio.

Volunteers, leaders honored during Farm-City Week program
The Franklin County Cooperative Extension Center staff conducted its annual Farm-City Week program on Nov. 14 at the Extension Center Annex in Louisburg.
With more than 60 people in attendance, including State Rep. Lucy Allen, the program’s theme of Food Marketing Safety was addressed through the speaker, Ross Williams, assistant director, Marketing Division, North Carolina Department of Agriculture.

Reassignment meeting for new school Dec. 6
The first meeting of an advisory committee to define school boundaries for the new county elementary school, Long Mill Elementary, will be Thursday night.
Long Mill will open for the 2008-09 school year, and the boundaries will change populations in Franklinton Elementary, Royal Elementary and Youngsville Elementary, officials anticipate.

Bulldogs bury FHS, 54-20
FRANKLINTON -- Less than one week ago, Durham Arts escaped with a four-point victory during a girls basketball matchup against Franklinton.
The rematch was much less suspenseful. In fact, the outcome had all but been determined before the first quarter had ended.
Using some clutch 3-point shooting and a tenacious pressure defense, the Lady Bulldogs stormed ahead early and went on to top Franklinton 54-20 in a non-conference contest Monday at the FHS Gymnasium.

Franklin County takedown
FRANKLINTON -- For the first time since the 2005-06 campaign, Franklin County’s three prep wrestling program appeared in the same building last Saturday as part of the Franklinton High Red Ram Duals.
Bunn, after taking last season off, has returned to the mat under new coach Mike Diaz. And Louisburg and Franklinton return a strong nucleus of performers from their respective squads, meaning that grappling heroics could be on the rise this winter across the county.

LOUISBURG -- Mike Holloman insists he isn’t concerned about the trek toward his 500th career victory as the women’s basketball coach at Louisburg College.

Health survey leaves a smoky trail in eateries
Chances are good that eating out in Franklin County means dealing with some, if not a lot, of cigarette smoke in between chews.
The county Department of Health has sent out the 2007-2008 Restaurant Heart Health Survey to 51 eateries, including chain and locally-owned restaurants and small store grills.

East Carolina Farm Credit changes its name
East Carolina Farm Credit, the largest rural lender in eastern North Carolina for more than 90 years, will change its name to AgCarolina Financial effective Dec. 1.
According to company officials, many rural residents and businesses aren’t aware that they are eligible to borrow from the member-owned lending cooperative.
