Foreclosures on the rise in Franklin County
After the first decline in a decade, Franklin County’s foreclosure activity is expected to spike by the end of the year.
From January until June, according to the N.C. Administrative Office of the Courts, Franklin County has recorded 285 foreclosure starts, a 58 percent increase over the same time period last year.

Cowher Remembered
BUNN -- A life less ordinary ended much too soon last Friday with the passing of Kaye Young Cowher.
One of Franklin County’s most beloved native daughters, Cowher, 54, died of skin cancer in Raleigh.
A pioneer in women’s athletics — at Bunn High School, North Carolina State University and beyond — Cowher is survived by her husband, former Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coach Bill Cowher, and three children.

High Speed Rail meeting in Franklinton on July 29
Franklinton is the last stop on the high-speed rail public hearing train, and officials want to make sure residents let their concerns be heard this Thursday..

National Night Out events planned
Franklinton and Louisburg are taking two different paths to National Night Out, but they hope to reach the same destination — safer communities.
This is the 27th year of the national event and Franklinton and Louisburg have hosted the community event for the past 19 and 18 years, respectively.

Bennett will play free Student Recital at Cherry Hill on Aug. 4
Michael Bennett, who at 11 has been described as a “young Mozart,” will be featured in a free Student Recital at Cherry Hill in the Warren County community of Inez at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4.
Bennett entered the Curtis Institute of Music’s organ program at age 11 and won the National Music Teachers Association Composition Contest at age 11 as well.

Grants available through the Tobacco Communities Fund
RAFI-USA’s Tobacco Communities Reinvestment Fund will make cost-share demonstration grants to farmers, farm organizations, and community groups in Franklin County. Cost-share support of up to $10,000 will be awarded to individual producers and support of up to $30,000 will be awarded to collaborative farmer efforts.

Franklin County Heritage Book deadline extended to Oct.1
The Franklin County Heritage Book deadline has been extended to Oct. 1, according to Annette Goyette.
“This will be the final date for receipt of all stories, pictures and book orders,” she said.
In making the announcement, Goyette said that dozens of family stories and pictures have been received, but scores more are still being written. This Oct. 1 deadline extension will give everyone a chance to submit an article, she said.

Deputies investigate theft of lawn mower
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Franklinton woman on assault charges.
According to a report by Dep. Daniel Wester, Tiara L. Allen, 19, and Gabriel Smith, were at the center of an altercation that turned into a knife attack in the 500 block of Fox Ridge Road at about 3 a.m. on July 24.

FRANKLINTON -- Franklinton’s 20-something coaching search continued recently with the hiring of Whitney Ledford to take over the Lady Rams’ fast-pitch softball program.
Ledford graduated with honors this spring from North Carolina State University in Raleigh. In addition to her softball duties, Ledford will teach English at Franklinton.

Franklinton High School Principal Charles Fuller has looked in-house to find his next Athletic Director -- at least for the ensuing school year.
Assistant Principal David Averette, who has served as FHS’ interim AD this summer following the resignation of Deran Coe, will continue to serve in that capacity through the spring of 2011.

MONTGOMERY, ALA. -- Scott Carroll pitched six innings of one-run baseball, leading Carolina to its third win in four games over the Montgomery Biscuits 5-1 at Riverwalk Stadium on Sunday night in a Class AA Southern League baseball matchup.
