Police arrest accessory to murder-suicide
Police arrested a Louisburg man they allege had a role in a murder-suicide.
Investigators on Tuesday afternoon charged Ryan Reynolds, 21, with accessory before the fact and aiding and abetting a felonious breaking and entering.
According to Louisburg Police Chief Rick Lassiter, Reynolds had gone to an apartment in Franklin Court Apartments the morning of Dec. 14 with the intent of helping Gregory Hicks get inside.

Tainted Christmas charity trying to regain its true holiday spirit
When allegations surfaced that former sheriff Pat Green illegally dipped into Shop with a Sheriff funds, a cloud hung over the program.
But Sheriff Jerry Jones, the United Way and others who donate to the program wanted to make sure that deserving children wake up Christmas morning with beaming smiles instead.

Hawthorne named FCS Asst. Principal of the Year
Geoffrey Hawthorne, assistant principal at Cedar Creek Middle School, has been named the 2012 Franklin County Schools Assistant Principal of the Year.
Hawthorne began his teaching career at Cedar Creek Middle School in 2005, teaching eighth grade social studies for four years.

Palziv in hiring phase, begins manufacturing
Topics ranging from an update on the area’s newest industry, to wrapping up a long-running utility project, to honoring a former member and even hearing complaints about its police department (see related story), the Louisburg town council had an eventful session Monday night.
A good portion of the meeting centered around Palziv, the area’s newest industry, when its CEO, Greg Brooker, brought the council an update on his company.

Business owners are upset with Louisburg Police
Owners of a local business, recently hit hard by smash-and-grab burglars, are also upset with the Louisburg Police Department and brought their concerns to the town council Monday night.
Jeremy Neal, who with his father, Dwight, operates Tar River Trading Co., on Bickett Boulevard in Louisburg, said someone threw a cinder block through the front window of the store about a month ago and quickly scooped up about $50,000 worth of gold and silver and fled.

Youngsville, Franklinton join forces to slow speeders
FRANKLINTON — Youngsville and Franklinton police combined efforts to slow down speeders.
It was the second time that Franklinton police teamed up with the state Highway Patrol’s motorcycle unit to employ LIDAR to identify speeders along U.S. 1.
And it was the first time they teamed up with Youngsville police to crack down on speeders along one of the county’s main thoroughfares.

Correction
The Louisburg High School student who allegedly brought a .22-caliber pistol to school in the glove compartment of his car is facing a misdemeanor charge of taking a weapon on educational property.
An earlier news report in The Franklin Times indicated that Clayton Williams, 17, was facing federal felony charges. However, because the gun was in a car and not brought into the school, misdemeanor charges were filed.

Franklinton gets updated on high-speed rail
FRANKLINTON — Staff got an update from those responsible for engineering a high-speed rail project that could cut the town in half.
Monday’s meeting was an opportunity for town officials and staff to continue dialogue about the Southeast High Speed Rail project and reiterate their call to prevent the project from closing major East-West thoroughfares to accommodate the train project.

Volunteer medical ministry helps with dental problems
For the past year and a half, a health care group has been dealing with dental issues that have been downright offensive.
In response, they held a DENTAL BLITZ last weekend to try and stem the tide, helping nearly 30 patients.

Convenience store owner shoots man
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Youngsville-area man accused of assaulting a woman over a period of hours.
Michael Severn’s mother, though, told authorities the claims were baseless.
Andrea Horton reported on Dec. 18 that she and her boyfriend, Severn, had gone out the evening before and when they returned to their Beechwood Drive home, Severn became violent.

No more closed sessions under the Christmas tree
As Christmas approaches, I figured it was the perfect time to check my Christmas list to old St. Nick.
The first thing I hope Santa Claus will bring is the end to all of these closed sessions.
I’ll be honest, I’ve lost count of the number of doors that have been closed in my face as town and county officials have elected to go into closed session to discuss county business.

BHS still unbeaten after road decision
WARRENTON -- A fourth-quarter flurry helped Bunn remain undefeated while winning its initial Northern Carolina Conference boys basketball matchup for the 2011-12 campaign.
Taking on a much-improved Warren County squad, the Wildcats outscored the Eagles by seven points in the final stanza en route to earning a 63-52 decision at the WCHS Gymnasium.
